Faster weight loss generally means faster lean-mass loss, and much of the alarming data comes from people losing weight without lifting at all. Scan-derived fat-free mass also includes water, so the muscle loss figures are often overstated.

More muscle means more capacity to store glucose, and training wakes up the GLUT4 transporters that carry glucose into the cell. Muscle also secretes myokines that counteract chronic inflammation and support brain health.
The stretched half of the rep does the work
